The Lady I rescued is not a vegan, or even a vegetarian. If you really care about your dog’s nutrition you don’t need to be either, but there are new choices in pet food that are worth checking out. At Global Pet Expo she spent quite a bit of time with Petcurean, learning about their new line of certified organic dog food, GATHER™, and their NOW FRESH™ dry pet food. In fact, so impressed with their products she wanted not only me to try them, but Taffy and Rhette too!
But first, let’s learn a little bit about just who Petcurean is:
- Single family-owned business in Canada since 1999
- Products are 100% guaranteed
- Committed to sustainability in packaging, for more information on their packaging click here
Petcurean GATHER™ — Certified Organic Including a Vegan Diet for Dogs
The Lady never felt the need to feed me an organic diet, let alone a vegan one. But, Petcurean’s GATHER line peaked her interest, whether it was the fresh looking packaging, or hearing the stories about how they got to know all of the fishermen, farmers and growers personally. And this is before they could pass the test for their standards in sustainability, while producing quality, certified organic products. All of this is represented with the graphics, packaging and in naming the different recipes.
GATHER comes in Wild Ocean Line-Caught Cod, Free Acres Organic Free-Range Chicken and Endless Valley Vegan. I have a history of stomach problems, mainly pancreatitis, which means the Lady watches my diet closely. Currently my diet consisted of a limited ingredient dry food made with alternate sources of protein such as venison or bison, avoiding beef, poultry and fish, as it’s too high in fat for me. GATHER’s vegan recipe makes perfect sense for my diet, limited ingredients made with certified organic pea protein and other pure and natural ingredients.
A plant-based option can be a great option for dogs. But you should always consult your vet before changing their diet just to be sure. All of GATHER’s recipes contain certified and organic ingredients featuring a single source, fresh and dehydrated primary protein, blended with premium quality natural nutrition. It is free from rendered or genetically engineered ingredients.
How does it taste? If my show of excitement when the Lady opened the bag is any proof, I loved it! I can honestly recommend GATHER’s Endless Valley Vegan for any dog.
Petcurean’s NOW FRESH™ — Taffy Transitions to a Senior Dog Diet
The Lady I rescued doesn’t consider Taffy a “senior dog.” But, when talking with Petcurean about their NOW FRESH™ recipes, which includes a senior dog food, the Lady realized that Taffy, at eight and a half years old, is probably a senior dog.
The life expectancy of a dog depends largely on it’s breed or size. According to the American Kennel Club, Cocker Spaniels can live up to 20 years old. The Lady also checked out PetMD.com to get information on when a dog is consider “senior.” As a guideline most dog’s can be considered senior between five and seven years old. Which is a lot younger than she thought.
Senior dog foods have nutrients and benefits for aging dogs that regular adult dog food doesn’t. NOW FRESH Grain Free Senior Dog Food recipe is made with 100% fresh turkey, salmon, duck and 100% fresh Omega 3 & 6 oils from coconuts and canola. You won’t find any grains, gluten, wheat, beef, corn, soy, rendered meats, by-products or artificial preservatives.
The senior dog recipe includes:
- Balanced proteins and fats to help manage weight
- Omega oils to promote skin and coat health
- Glucosamine/chondroitin to support hip and joint health
- Added L-Carnitine to support heart health/fat burning
- Pre + probiotics to support digestion
The Lady is confident that now is the time to start feeding Taffy the NOW FRESH senior dog recipe. Always consult with your vet about your dog’s specific needs.
Petcurean’s NOW FRESH™ — Rhette Transitions to a Senior Cat Diet
As with Taffy, the Lady think it’s time to think about a senior cat recipe for Rhette. Since we don’t really know how old Rhette is, he was about seven or eight when we took him in, it means he’s at least 10 years or older. Definitely a senior cat! According to PetMD.com the same rules apply to determining if a cat is senior or not as in dogs. Which means between the age of seven and 10 for cats.
Petcurean’s NOW FRESH Grain Free Senior Cat Food Recipe contains the same quality features as their senior dog food. What caught the Lady’s attention is the size of the dry kibble. Much smaller than Rhette’s current food, which he crunches to make smaller, spitting out much of it and not touching again. She thinks the smaller kibble is perfect for Rhette and senior cats that may have difficulty chewing their dry kibble.
Rhette loved the new food! Which the Lady wasn’t so sure he would, cats are picky eaters you know. As Rhette is currently on a “weight management” diet, which means he isn’t losing weight, calorie count is very important to the Lady. Comparing calorie counts, his current food is 300kcal ME/cup and the senior cat recipe is 393 kcal/cup. So measuring his food will be important so that he doesn’t gain any weight. But the NOW FRESH recipe is much higher quality with fresh ingredients and the proper nutrients for an aging cat, so worth changing his diet.
